What is Cappella Music Center?
Founded in 1998, Cappella Choirs is nonprofit after school music program for youth in the greater Kitsap area. Children benefit from an enriching experience of working and performing with other talented young singers and our skilled professional staff. Boys and girls from Kindergarten through 12th grade may participate. About 80 children participate yearly.
What does the program offer?
Cappella Choirs is made up of six choirs open to singers in grades K-12. We have separate training choirs for girls and boys with little or no previous music experience. Our auditioned choirs are designed for more advanced singers who have some instrumental or choral training. We provide instruction in vocal technique, music history, theory and ear training. The most dedicated singers also have the opportunity to tour. In addition to the year-long choir program, we offer two summer camps open to all interested singers. Social activities are scheduled throughout the year so that our singers can get to know each other better.
What's special about Cappella Choirs?
Our purpose is to nurture the appreciation of choral art and the shared experience of creating fine choral music. Our staff provides a challenging, but non-threatening environment to help children build confidence and develop a team-work attitude and goal setting skills. Our choirs and summer camps draw in an outstanding group of young people who are dedicated to practicing hard to create something beautiful. All you need is a desire to learn and a love of singing.
What kind of music do the choirs sing?
The choirs sing unison through 4-part music written for youth voices. We select from a wide range of traditional and contemporary works including arrangements of folk songs, pieces with texts in foreign languages, seasonal and sacred literature.
Where do the choirs perform?
In addition to maintaining a regular concert season of four mainstage performances each school year, Cappella Choirs makes appearances at local community events like the Harrison Hospital Festival of Trees, tree lighting ceremonies, and service organization meetings and parties. The touring choirs also travel an average of once per season. Past tours have taken the choirs to Oregon, Idaho, California, Hawaii, and New York.
Community Outreach
Cappella Choirs is dedicated to finding ways of engaging the general public in the choral arts. Our current major community outreach project is the Fort Worden Children's Choir Festival, taking place each Memorial Day Weekend in Port Townsend, WA. Cappella Choirs hosts this annual event that brings together over 250 children each year. Community choirs register to participate with their singers. Each choir rehearses selected choral works before coming together for a weekend of rehearsals and concert with a recognized guest conductor. Choirs also share their own repertoire with each other in a non-competitive atmosphere.
Cappella Choirs Music Center
The Cappella Choirs Music Center is a place for music to happen. Through the purchase of this retired church building on Sidney Avenue in Port Orchard, we are ensuring that the choirs will have a permanent home from which to grow for years to come. The Music Center provides rehearsal space for all of our choirs and offices for our staff. There are private teaching studios and a hall for recitals. The facility is close to the center of Port Orchard, yet easily accessible from the freeway, allowing students to come from all areas of Kitsap County. In addition to our choirs, the Music Center allows us to offer private instruction by trained teachers in the disciplines of piano, voice, percussion, clarinet, sax, guitar, and string.
